We're going on a NOUN hunt!

In writing this week we are learning that a noun is a person, place or thing. To introduce this concept Ms. Lopez showed the class some items from a basket and the students had to try to figure out what they had in common.

Ms. Lopez's Basket
The students really stretched their brains trying to think of what these items all had in common. At last Ms. Lopez had to reveal to the class that what these items all had in common was that they were all NOUNS! There was a ball (thing), a stuffed animal (thing), a picture of Ms. Lopez and Harrison (people), a staple remover (thing), a picture of the mountains (place), a picture of a boat dock (place), and a manatee (thing). After working on some paper practice to strengthen their Noun identifying skills, each student went on his/her own "Noun Hunt" searching for one thing, person, and place. After finding their nouns, students shared their baskets on the carpet playing a Noun guessing game.

The students really enjoyed finding Nouns around our classroom! Have some learning fun by going on a Noun Hunt at your house or in your neighborhood!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to these students for recieving Manatee Awards for the month of October! Eva got 2 awards: one for working hard in Literacy and one for PE. Landus recieved his award for working hard in Math and William got his for working hard using his Manatee Manners. Keep up the great work, kiddos!

The World According to Humphrey!

We are almost done reading our first, but definitely not our last, Humphrey book! The class LOVES Humphrey and all the adventures he goes on to help his friends. Check out the "Learning Links" tab for a link to the website created by Betty Birney, the author.

P.S. Ms. Lopez is coming up with a "top secret" way to celebrate reading the first book, so stay tuned for more on that later!

We love math!

The kids of Room 509 really enjoy math centers. Each day small groups work with a teacher and then have a chance to work on math games, problem solving, paper practice, fact practice or read math books.

Meet Manny, Our Class Mascot!

"Manny", our class mascot, travels home each week with a different student. He has had some great adventures so far with Daniel, Maggie, Kristina and Tayshawn. With Daniel, Manny had guitar lessons; with Maggie, Manny played with her manatee, Moon; With Kristina, Manny read lots of books and with Tayshawn, Manny ate a lot of different foods! The students are being very responsible with Manny by taking care of him, loving him and writing all about his adventures in his journal.
